Tips to Help Prepare For Your Move

  • About 6-8 weeks before the move the customer should reach out to multiple moving companies for quotes for their services. At Marie’s, we take pride in providing free in-person estimates, but if you are requesting a quote from a different company, do not rely on a quote over the phone. Getting multiple estimates can help identify what different moving companies charge for. Check for reviews as well as pricing information!
  • Create and use a moving binder to keep yourself organized during the full process of the move. Include all estimates, receipts, and an accurate/up-to-date inventory of all the items you are moving. As the process goes along make sure to mark changes in the moving binder.
  • 2-4 weeks before move, select a company to work with and make sure you are on their calendar with tentative dates. If dates need to change for any reason please reach out as soon as possible!
  • Make sure that your closing times/dates are solidified by your realtor. The closing time and the time you are allowed to move in may differ, requiring an overnight hold of your items and/or a later start for the offload.
  • Landline telephones/cell phone/cable/satellite boxes: Arrange or transfer services to a new location if staying within the current service area. Make sure you return the original cable box to the provider and DO NOT have the crew pack it if you are moving outside the service area.
  • One Month before moving, notify the following of your move: banks, brokerage firms, your employer’s HR department, credit card, insurance, and utility companies.
  • Organize school records (if applicable): Go to your children’s school and arrange for their records to be transferred to their new school district.
  • Do a change of address: Go to your local post office and fill out a change of address form. Alternatively, you can do it online at www.usps.gov/.
  • Social Security/Veteran: If collecting benefits, be sure to change your address. This can be done online at www.mysocialsecurity.gov/.
  • Forward medical records: Arrange for medical records to be sent to any new healthcare providers or obtain copies of them yourself (for you and your children if applicable).
  • Arrange for daycare for the day of the move. A job site is no place for a child, it will be safer for everyone involved if they are either not present or in a section of the house that is not moving.
  • Be sure to keep all important items like documents, prescriptions, birth certificates, social security cards, motor vehicle titles, etc. in a filebox/safe which stays with you personally. These items should stay on the customer’s person throughout the move and not be placed in the truck.
  • Around 2-4 weeks before the move, arrange to be off from work on moving day: notify your place of business that you plan to supervise the move and need the day off. If the customer wants items placed specifically he/she must be present in order to direct the crew!
  • A couple weeks before the move, reach out to us: reconfirm arrangements with our customer service team. If any changes to the job have been made, please address them at this point to keep us fully up to date.
  • Sort and purge: Go through every room of your house and decide what you’d like to keep and what you can get rid of. A general guideline would be if you haven’t used or thought about the item in the past 9 months, you can probably get rid of it.
  • Use it or lose it: Start using up things that you don’t want to move, like frozen or perishable foods and cleaning supplies. Any refrigerators or freezers need to be EMPTY in order to move.
  • Take measurements: Check room dimensions at your new home, if possible and make sure larger pieces of furniture will fit through the doorway.
  • Defrost the freezer: If your fridge is moving with you, make sure to empty, clean and defrost it at least 24 hours before moving day.
  • Begin packing: Start packing the things that you use most infrequently, such as the waffle iron and croquet set (don’t pack items you use everyday). As you are packing, be sure to leave yourself with daily supplies until a couple days before the move. Paper records, china, any display items, unused dishware, can be packed very early on.
  • Be sure not to pack your purse/wallet, cellphone, keys for car/apartment, any medication you will need before, during or after the move.
  • 1-2 weeks before move start to label: Clearly label and number each box with its contents and the room it’s destined for. This will allow the crew to know where your items should be placed in the new house.
  • Separate valuables: Add items such as jewelry and important files to a safe box that you’ll personally transport to your new home. Jewelry travels safely in cars and are small items. If it is an item you are concerned about it is better to keep it on your person during the move if possible.
  • Pack a box that is stable: Do not overpack boxes, check if you can still lift the box you are packing when you are done. Overpacked boxes have a high chance of falling apart.
  • Items in an overpack box are far more likely to sustain damage.
  • Slow and steady: It is always better to pack over a long period; do not procrastinate! Packing 2-5 boxes a day will be much less stressful than trying to do 50 the night before. If you do not think you have the time to pack anymore please contact your moving company for help!
  • Paper is your friend: It is always better to over use paper than under use, your items will be more protected. The paper and air work together to create a buffer between each item.
  • Pack heavier items in smaller boxes. Place heavier items towards the bottom and lighter items at the top. Any heavy items placed on top of lighter items will most likely result in damage.
  • ALWAYS pack any fragile dishes and china vertically. Plates, bowls, cups, champagne glasses, mugs should all be packed vertically.
  • Larger dish pack/china boxes should be packed in layers separated by sheets of packing paper. You can typically fit between 2-3 layers of items inside a china box.
  • Place 2-3 sheets of paper on the bottom of every box.
